Afternoon Tea at Bacchus is offered daily from 2-4pm.
The restaurant is located inside the Wedgewood Hotel in the heart of downtown Vancouver. At only $45 per person it is one of the more reasonably priced afternoon teas that you can find in BC.
We went to Bacchus with a group of 20 of us for a birthday party. Since we were a large group we were seated in the Library Room. It was lovely and private from the rest of the dining area. The whole restaurant was very elegant with velvet seating and dark wood and warm lighting. Service was very professional but not pretentious.
First, our server brought out a box of tea samples so we could smell each of them. There were a total of 10 to choose from. We each took turns passing around the bottles and smelling the aroma of each tea to help make our selection.
I decided on the Lavender Earl Grey and it was perfect with milk and sugar. I’m not normally a tea drinker – I much prefer coffee. But this tea was delicious and I finished two carafes!
Ryan went with the Pear Green Tea which he loved. It had a strong fruity taste.
I liked the sugar. It wasn’t just your usual white granulated sugar. It was special.
Our server brought out the tiers of finger foods and we all dove right in. I love the way the food is presented at afternoon tea. In a way it makes me eat quicker than usual because I just want to try the next treat displayed in front of me!
We had a discussion about the proper way to eat the treats. Do you start at the bottom or at the top? Some thought you are supposed to start at the top and work your way down. However I’ve always started at the bottom to eat the savoury pieces first before working up to the sweets.
What’s your take on it? Top or bottom first? Or just mix it up and eat whatever appeals to you?!
Ryan and I decided to start at the bottom. There were 5 sandwiches: egg salad, cucumber and cream cheese, tandoori chicken, smoked tuna and shrimp. The smoked tuna was my favourite but I also really enjoyed the tandoori chicken. Cucumber sandwiches might sound weird to some but Ryan and I actually found them really good. Simple but tasty.
The next tier was an almond tart filled with strawberry, a fruit tart, and a lemon chiffon white chocolate cake. My favorite of this bunch was definitely the lemon chiffon cake. It was light and moist. Some found it too sweet but not me.
The third and final tier was the biscuit, eclair and chocolate hazelnut macaron. The macaron was far from the best I’ve had so it was slightly disappointing, but the eclair was pretty good. The real star was the biscuit, served with clotted cream and an assortment of preserves (orange, raspberry, strawberry and blackberry).
We all agreed that the biscuit was probably the best of all the treats offered. A lot of people didn’t realize there were preserves on the table for the biscuits so don’t forget about those! We all ended up taking home a little jar since so many didn’t get used.
Tip: Street parking is almost non-existent so don’t waste your time trying to figure out where to park. And don’t end up at one of the overpriced parking garages. The best place to park is actually across the street under Robson Court (where the law courts and UBC are). Parking was only $6 until 6pm! Or $12 for the entire day.
