Review: YOTELAIR Singapore Changi Airport Hotel

Prior to our early morning bucketlist flight on Singapore Airlines, we spent the night at the YOTELAIR Singapore Changi Airport hotel.  Having just arrived on a flight from Malaysia, we decided it was best to remain at the airport for our overnight layover.  This transit hotel is conveniently located within The Jewel, making it an ideal place to rest between flights.

Hotel Overview

YOTEL has a number of locations around the world, including five YOTELAIR locations within airports.  The YOTELAIR locations cater to transit passengers, offering both overnight stays as well as hourly rates during the day.

This was our first time ever staying at a YOTEL and we were excited to see how it would compare to a traditional hotel.  We had been trying to decide between the Crowne Plaza, which is also located at Changi Airport, and the YOTEL.  We ultimately decided on the YOTEL as it was cheaper and we were intrigued by the hotel’s “cabin” concept.

YOTELAIR Singapore Changi Airport Location

The hotel is located landside, meaning it is outside of security, in the public area of the airport in The Jewel.  If you’re not familiar with The Jewel, it is the large shopping centre directly connected to Singapore Changi Airport, full of beautiful attractions, eateries and popular shops.

YOTELAIR is located on the 4th floor of The Jewel, easily accessed by taking the Lobby H elevator or taking the escalators.  You should have no trouble spotting the illuminated YOTELAIR entrance located at the back left corner of level four.

Booking YOTELAIR Singapore Changi Airport

You can search your dates for YOTELAIR Singapore Changi Airport on Booking.com.  We like using them as their rates are usually very competitive AND they offer free cancellation with no prepayment needed

For this particular stay, we decided to book via the American Express Travel portal since we had a $200 annual travel credit to use, courtesy of our Platinum card.

The total cost of our stay came to CAD $258.10, so after applying our $200 credit, we only paid $58.10 out of pocket.

If you do not yet have a Platinum American Express credit card, we highly recommend it if you travel frequently and appreciate a bit of luxury!  It’s our favourite travel credit card in our wallet.  Despite it’s eye-watering annual fee, the value we get out of it year after year always more than makes up for it.

For example, every year we receive a $200 travel credit to use on the American Express Travel portal, plus there are often additional promotional travel credits throughout the year.  For example, when we booked The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore, we were able to apply our other $200 travel credit AND stack it with a promotion of “Spend $800, get $200”, for a total of $400 off of our hotel stay!

Arrival and Check-in

After arriving at Terminal 4 on a short Air Asia flight from Kuala Lumpur, we took the shuttle over to The Jewel.  Note that if you land at any of the other three terminals, it is possible to walk over to The Jewel rather than taking the shuttle.

When we entered The Jewel, we were immediately drawn to the stunning indoor waterfall that Changi Airport is so famous for.  After taking some photos, we took the escalators up to Level 4.

We quickly spotted YOTELAIR and headed over to check in.  There are self-service kiosks where you can check in without speaking to anybody, but we didn’t realize this until after checking in at the desk.  Either way, check-in was very quick.

Room Review: Premium Queen Cabin

There are only three room types at the YOTELAIR Singapore Changi Airport:

  • Premium Queen Cabin (max. 2 adults)
  • Accessible Premium Queen Cabin (max. 2 adults)
  • Family Cabin (1 queen bed, plus 2 single bunk beds, max. 4 adults)

We booked the Premium Queen Cabin and were assigned Room 232.

As soon as we entered the room, our first thoughts were: “Wow, this is tight”, “The bed looks comfy”, and “This lighting is interesting”.

There are no windows in the room.  Instead, the room was illuminated in a cool purple/pink hue.  Apparently violet light is good for your circadian rhythm? We found it quite nice.  However, if it’s not for you, you can switch to regular white light.

Bed

The queen bed was in the upright position when we arrived, which kind of reminded me of a hospital bed.  However, it was very comfy.  The upright position was actually nice for watching TV.

When it was time to sleep, with the push of a button, we laid the bed flat.  Once the lights were off, the room was extremely dark which allowed for a deep, restful sleep.

Space

As you can see from the photos, the room is very cozy.  Once you have your luggage inside, and lay down the bed, there is not much room to move around.

Thankfully, we only had our two carry-on bags, which could be stored underneath the bed.  However, when we had to open up our bags, there was literally nowhere to step.

We saw others with large suitcases and they left them out in the hall because there’s just no room for them in these tiny rooms.

Note that there is no closet in this room.  There is just a single wall hook with two hangers to hang up your clothes.

Bathroom

The bathroom is separated from the bedroom area by a glass divider and door.  If you’re feeling shy, there’s a curtain to cover the glass.

It is small, but not too tight.  There’s a small sink with no counter space, but there are some shelves on the wall where you can place your things.

Toiletries are provided: hand soap, body wash and shampoo (no conditioner, though), toothbrushes and toothpaste.

There’s even a small hair dryer provided.

The toilet is basic and there’s no bidet.

YOTELAIR Singapore Changi Airport Shower

As for the shower, it’s spacious enough, and I was impressed that it even had a rainfall showerhead.

Work Space

Despite the room’s small size, they’ve still managed to fit in a small desk and chair.

The table folds out from along the wall to pair with the stool that’s folded next to the bed.  Universal power outlets are available, which is nice!  Above the desk is complimentary bottled water.

TV, Air Conditioning and Wi-Fi

There is a flat screen TV at the foot of the bed but we didn’t have time to use it.  Wi-Fi worked well and was free.

Beside the door is a thermostat which was already set to 21 degrees (the lowest temperature it goes).  The room was nicely cooled.

YOTELAIR Singapore Changi Facilities

Komyuniti Lounge

There’s a nice little lounge which is free for all guests to use.  It’s open 24/7 with complimentary water, tea and coffee provided.

Komyuniti Complimentary Drinks

You’ll find some small tables and chairs, and even views of the famous indoor waterfall.

Breakfast

A complimentary light breakfast is provided at the Komyuniti Lounge between 6:30am-9:30am daily.

Since our Singapore Suites flight included access to The Private Room, we headed there for breakfast.  Otherwise, we would have been very happy to take advantage of this free breakfast.

Gym

The YOTELAir does have a small gym available for guests to use 24/7.  However, we did not have time to go check it out.

Verdict: Is it worth staying at the YOTELAIR Singapore Changi Airport Hotel?

If you are arriving late at Changi Airport, have an early morning flight like us, or are on an overnight layover, the YOTELAIR is a great option.  We loved the convenience of being right in the Jewel and steps away from all the shops, restaurants and attractions.

It was wonderful to wake up and just walk downstairs to check in for our flight.  Not having to worry about traffic and how to get to the airport on time definitely took the stress out of the morning.

However, the nightly rate is quite high for what you get so if I had a longer overnight layover, I’d look at options outside of the airport to save some money.  But if you simply want the convenience of being within the airport, the YOTELAIR is the perfect choice.
